Transform the way you work. Transform the way you live
We live in a culture built on making our own way, earning our stripes and constantly leveling up. I feel we have outgrown this mentality in a lot of ways. Its been decades, even centuries since we've analyzed our cultural work ethic and I believe now is the time to have this conversation.
I had often thought that this hard working mindset appeared in my family because we were born of immigrants. Even as a kid you could feel this urgency to help out, get to work, start saving, and do your part. My family work hard, yes, but what was the catalyst for this constant doing.
For most of my life I wore this inherited work ethic like a badge of honor, and it fueled much of my young adulthood.
It wasn’t until I reach my mid 20's that started feeling the affects on my body. What I once perceived as a power source, became something that dragged me down. I no longer felt like I had an endless resource of energy, quite the opposite really, and I knew something had to change.
I can only presume from stories I've heard, that my ancestors crossed the Atlantic with a slew of complex emotions including fear. They were in survival mode. One can only imagine the struggles they endured to make in another country.
While I have complete respect for all that my ancestors sacrificed for me to be where I am today, I am ready to embody a different mindset.
Today, I work smarter not harder, and I adopt healthy relationships with my work.
How can you transform the way you live by transforming the way you work?
Develop strong boundaries
If you work with others, be sure to tell your colleagues when you are overworked. You never know who just may be willing to lend a hand.
Communicate to your superiors about your work load. If your manager asks you to pick up another job, and you are already overloaded, say no and explain why.
Be timely when responding to emails but don’t feel the need to respond as they come in. Instead, carve out blocks of time when you are responding to emails.
Get up from your desk for lunch. At one point when I was feeling very overwhelmed with corporate life I started blocking out my lunch hours. No one can schedule me for meetings and the hour is completely mine.
Take breaks throughout the day. Don't just take a lunch break, get up and take a walk, get some water, make a coffee, walk a lap around the block. These little breaks will do wonders for your mind
